Choose an ancillary service endorsement?

In a perfect mailing world, people wouldn't move and the mail would always reach its intended destination. Americans, however, are a mobile society...It used to be said that the average American moved once every five years. Although the relocation frequency is somewhat less today, keeping track of people is still a difficult task.

The Ancillary Service Endorsement is an instructional statement printed on the face of the mailpiece. If the mailpiece cannot be delivered to the indicated address, the Postal Service will look for this additional instruction. By using an Ancillary Service Endorsement, you direct the Postal Service in its handling of your undeliverable mail.

Here are the endorsements and how they work:

First Class Mail
"Forwarding Service Requested"
or no endorsement
Forwarded at no charge up to 12 months. Months 13-18 mailpiece returned with new address; no charge. After month 18, or if undeliverable, mailpiece is returned with reason for non-delivery; no charge.
"Address Service Requested" Forwarded at no charge up to 12 months; a separate notice of new address is provided and a correction fee charged. Months 13-18 the mailpiece is returned with new address; no charge. After month 18, or if undeliverable, mailpiece is returned with reason for non-delivery; no charge.
"Return Service Requested" Mailpiece returned with new address or reason for non-delivery; no charge.

Here are some guidelines for determining which endorsement, if any, to use:

If you are "renting" a mailing list for one time use, then choose no endorsement or "Forwarding Service Requested". It wouldn’t make sense to pay return postage or an address correction fee to maintain a list you don’t own.
If you build and maintain your own list of clients or prospects, it makes sense to keep your addresses up to date. Always use an endorsement which will notify you of address changes.
If you are using First Class Automation Mail, you are required to maintain your list with an address correction "tool." Use endorsements "Address Service Requested," "Return Service Requested" or "Change Service Requested."
Use the endorsement "Return Service Requested" to have items of value returned to you or to imply that the addressee has received the mailpiece.
